Petition: We need moar than 25 groups in SecondLife!
I wont go in details on how annoying the 25 groups limitation in SecondLife is (yes, you can thank me, I won’t!). Most of you hate it. But groups is essential not only to receive spammage, but also especially to manage property and salespoint. As an aspiring land shark I feel this limitation is seriously borking my ambitions for total world domination. OK that was just a joke but if you own land, and is a member of a few clubs and interest groups, it doesn’t take long before you are capped.
Some important highlights about the problem:
- Group limitation is responsible for my own estimation of at least 50% of the alternate avatar creation. People get capped to 25 so they create useless alternates just to hold or manage more groups, which is a huge waste of technical resources. Also dramatically bork LL’s own statistics about the real number of people inworld.
- Group limitation may seem trivial, but some people told me it had to do with some technical limitation too, something about checking active group at each parcel border. It seem the limitation was 15 previously, and then raised to 25. But this is no reason for not wanting more, I think the “alternate avatar” problem eats up much more resources globally.
- There’s a JIRA entry regarding that limitation.
A bunch of DJs got fed up with the limitation and decided to write a petition to Linden Labs. They suggest to raise up the limit from 25 to 50. If you ask me, I could use up to 100! Please sign the petition avaliable here:

UPDATE: On an even moar funny note, PetitionOnline.Com censored my avatar name. I tried signing the petition 3 times without success. I starred a letter in my name and it got through, I’m signature #731. Is “bastard” even a swear word? Fuck you PetitionOnline.Com! Really! Censoring someone’s name is NOT free expression!

I’ve been posting about this for a while too, it’s extremely annoying and downright frustrating to constantly have to juggle groups. It seems to be penalizing the MOST ENGAGED USERS which is why it makes the least sense to me.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this gets addressed sooner rather than later. Thanks for adding to the din!
Oh yeah Fleep just try and name me ONE person that doesn’t think we need more groups. It frustrates everyone. Agreed, it penalizes the most active users, and furthermore, it also stifles business in general! I refused countless group offers from merchants that I was actually interested in buying products from, just to keep more groups of immediate importance. It’s ridiculous. Or they increase the limit, or they find another way of mass mailing customers. Maybe doing a new system called Lists that are NOT groups, which are able to handle permissions. Lists could be just for mailing and mass communications. It’s just an idea like that, because it’s really hurting everyone.
Feel free to post your articles about it here Fleep, I will approve them for publishing ^^
Yes very annoyed by this… anyone who is a business owner or works for a business in SL suffers the fate of cutting groups…then of course you have those friends who are offended you dropped their group…and most of us only do this due to business needs.
I agree coding… many alts that are only used as a phone book for groups…what a waste of a good alt!!

no, we don’t (well some do obvy, lol)! but we REALLY DO NEED more than 117 prims per 512sqm parcel!!11!
;)
haha Magnus, well that just depends how many activities you do. but trust me on that one, most people need at least a few more, or an alternative way i would call “Lists”, like information groups.
and i agree with you, 117 prims is… weak! i know the prims are calculated according to the sim’s processing power. i have haircuts that takes more than 117 prims and i agree building a home on a 512 isn’t exactly fun.
Would it not be logical to take the appropriate channels and just all vote on the jira issue? Petitions haven’t really worked in the past either. What was that first one about again? =d
[…] Well, all this group membership limitation trouble and pain that burdens your Second Life will be over soon! That is, if you go to JIRA issue MISC-208 ‘More than 25 groups!’ and vote positively for it. Veyron said to do so in her putch to expand SL group limit! And CodeBasterd Regrave also thinks this is a great idea. Yet I do not see why we would have to use a petition if we have JIRA. […]
Agreed sweet Vint! Hence the reason why I also linked to the JIRA ticket. I was merely mentioning some other people’s effort to get heard through that petition. Working or not, I heard from “a friend of a Linden” that they are examining this issue very seriously now that the JIRA ticket got so many votes XD yay!
Thanks for letting us know about the petition. Surprisingly, there are over twice as many signatures on the petition than votes on the actual bug itself.

[…] It seems I’m not the only one frustrated with this, and in addition to a Jira issue already having achieved (at this time) 789 votes, there are numerous blog posts by successful in-world businesses and even individuals railing against the group limit and pleading with LL to address the issue, even to the point of starting one petition after another.
