Codie’s Tips & Tricks: #1 Feet sinking in the floor? Just sit down!

Funny, My Second Life, Tips & Tricks — CodeBastard Redgrave on December 19, 2007 at 1:56 am

One of the first big bug I noticed in SL, and that never really got corrected, is a bug that affected my style more than any other avatar I know of. It usually manifest itself by both my feet sinking into the floor where I’m standing, often down to my ankles.

My theories are:

a) my ass is too big and my body mass is superior, and it seems to be happening more often in higher altitudes, therefore it must be a gravity issue with the Havok physics engine

OR

b) I’m just way too hot and the floor is melting under my feet

Whatever the explanation is, it pisses me off, first because I look much smaller, secondly because it breaks my zen by not being very fashionable. Since I live in a skybox, I may as well swim in a pool of sweet ceramic. I wish I had some example pictures illustrating the bug, but very simply, my feet are just invisible and drowned in the floor up to my ankles.

But! I found an easy way to get rid of the nasty glitch when that happens, and it’s very simple too. I was reading the JIRA about similar issues while crossing sims. One mentioned a really easy way to fix it, sit on it. So I had nothing to loose by trying it, and it worked!

If your feet are sinking into the floor, just sit on something, anything, and stand up again. Tadaaa! Seems the physics engine recalculates your altitude and each time I tried it, the glitch disappeared.

Woot! Havok 0, Good looks 1

  1. yay… Kim told me about this on Sunday…almost two years old and still learning basic new stuff.

Thx for this and any other glitch relief you throw our way!!

  2. I’ve had this bug too on my skybox and my avie is relatively short. for a while all I had to sit on up there was an old posing stand, but that worked fine. I also noticed that I often only needed to walk over the posing stand in order to get my feet out of the floor.

Another thing that seems to work at sim crossings is to hold the spacebar once you start sinking. It stops your fall and I guess it gives the server enough time to correct your position. I think I picked that up from one of Torley’s old videos, but I’m not sure.

  3. Wolf and I have this problem in our workshop, plus what we call ‘bendy leg syndrome’! We keep a basic plywood cube up there by the TP landing point, just for sitting on, though very often we only notice when we go to hug. very frustrating!

  5. @Annyka: oooo thanks for the additional info and tips Annyka! very useful infos!

@Venk well I may be more of a noob than you dear, but I just figured it out a few days ago too. so we shared ignorance on that fact.

@phoenix totally agreed dear, why buy 350L high heels when they are fused into the floor? mmmmm? i think SL shoemakers should gather around a JIRA bug report just for that one! *grins*

@Poke: hahahaha awwww TY dear ^^

  6. Well bugger me.

You know, I’ve been having that same problem for two and a half years, every time I TPed into my *ahem* ‘workspace’ my feet would be stuck in the floor. I always thought it was something to do with a borked landmark or something. It never occurred to me just to sit on something and stand up again.

    /me slaps forehead.

    D’oh!

  8. Doesn’t help when someone replaces the floor/ground with a phantom prim covering… A BOTTOMLESS PIT! Then you sink really really fast.

Will did that on Edloe once. Had some flowers as a lure and it got me.

  9. [...] I’ve written in this blog before about my views on avatar height. The point has also come up recently in Faker shows because I want to be the tallest avatar onstage. It’s an oddball quirk to be sure, but there you have it. But, one thing I only recently realized is that sometimes, especially in skyboxes, my feet sometimes sink into the floor. So, sometimes I’m standing next to someone and they’re feet aren’t sunk into the floor and mine are. So, of course there is going to be a height difference. So, how do you get your feet to not sink into the floor? Well, the Lindens could come up with a bug fix. Seems like it should be an easy enough thing to have worked out by now. But, while we wait for them to do their thing, the quick fix is to sit on something and stand up again. True, we shouldn’t have to do that, but if you want your cool new shoes to show up, you’ll have to. You can read what I just read here if you want to learn more. Also, apologies to anyone who I’ve yelled at for being taller than me lately. It’s like that scene from A Hard Day’s Night. [...]

  10. The JIRA for this issue is https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1592. Andrew Linden tried to close it saying it was fixed but it got opened right back up.
